NARRATIVE DESIGN

Games have been practically from the beginning not only for entertainment, but also for telling stories.

And although in the first years of their existence they borrowed a lot from older media, such as literature or film, we now know that game narratives are constructed quite differently and should be adapted to the limitations and possibilities of this medium. And the latter are many, if you take into account such specific elements as the interactivity of the medium itself or the non-linearity of the stories created in it.

As part of the Narrative Design path, you will learn about the general principles of creative writing and world formation, as well as carry out projects that will allow you to control both the script and dialogue structures.

  • you will learn to design, prototype and create your own interactive stories

  • you will learn the principles of designing transmedia narratives, creative writing and world creation

  • you will take classes with screenwriters of digital games and other popular culture media, such as comics or role-playing games

  • you will learn game analysis that allows you to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the indicated titles

  • you will learn how to build, communicate and maintain a consistent vision of the game throughout the duration of the project

Player testing methods - you will gain the ability to conduct focus and usability tests on players, which will allow you to improve the quality of the created game and answer key questions arising during the design

Designing digital game scenarios - you will learn the theory of narration in digital games and learn to construct a story and adapt the game scenario to the narrative possibilities of the genre and platform

Designing world stories - you will learn to analyze and assess the strengths and weaknesses of selected world stories and develop a project of your own in the group

Interface design and user experience - you will learn the basics of graphic design and design your own interface for a selected genre of digital game

Game production and market - you will learn the game production process in relation to the specifics of local and global markets along with their cultural and economic context

AN EXPERT SAYS

Each game – as a text of culture – carries a specific, complex message, modulated at various levels: aesthetic, symbolic, fictional or narrative. Poetry classes will help you better understand how to consciously and effectively translate this message into the language (and even languages) of video games. Designing worlds and their inhabiting characters, writing scripts and dialogues – these are all very important elements of the game’s narrative that we will try to learn about, but well-designed interfaces and mechanics play an equally important role in many digital stories. In other words – you will learn how to speak through this specific medium, which is a video game, to make the message attractive on the one hand, and effective on the other.
